Gratitude as a Practice

gratitude.jpg

Many now call gratitude practice even science to help stay healthy.

Ancient times have always had a deep relationship to this concept of gratitude practice and made offerings to give reverence to the elements, seasons, animals, and each other in life and in death.

What does gratitude do to the brain?

Gratitude And Neurotransmitters
When we express gratitude and receive the same, our brain releases dopamine and serotonin, the two crucial neurotransmitters responsible for our emotions, and they make us feel 'good'.

They enhance our mood immediately, making us feel happy from the inside.

Gratitude might be the ultimate spiritual practice

This is because of its root, meaning “to praise, to celebrate; to be in contact with the Divine.” In other words, being grateful is equivalent to feeling the presence of the Divine in our lives. It is the same as being in a state of bliss.

SAT CHIT ANANDA

Absolute Bliss Consciousness

Sat Chit Ananda, Sat is that never changes, Truth, Absolute Being.

Chit is consciousness.

Ananda is bliss. Absolute Bliss Consciousness.

The whole philosophy of ananda (ānanda), and ānanda as the basis of life, as the sustainers of life, and as that ultimate into which everything dissolves. That ānanda is life. The creation is born out of ānanda, is sustained in ānanda, and will eventually dissolve in ānanda, will evolve from ānanda, will be maintained in ānanda, will dissolve in ānanda.

The cycle of evolution and dissolution which continues forever is in ānanda. And ānanda alone is. This knowledge taught by Bhrigu to his son Varuni is located beyond "akasha" (ākās̄́a).

Akasha (ākās̄́a): space.

Akasha is characterized by sound. Where ever there is sound, there is Akasha. And when it is located beyond Akasha, it means it is located in the field which transcends sound, transcends speech, transcends thought. If you take awareness to that field of transcendental consciousness, you will know that ananda is all that there is, by direct experience.

This verse of the Upanishads comes out to say about Transcendental Meditation (TM). And establishes that in and out of life is all that one element which is bliss. It speaks of life evolving from ananda. Creation coming out of ananda.

Sustained in ananda. Goes to ananda. The entire field of individual, inception, as a wave of cosmic life, is in the field of ananda. Bliss, which is my Self. So, the eternity of ananda is what puts ananda parallel to Sat, never changes. And because it can become a living reality, bliss can become a living reality, this bliss is equated with Chit, consciousness. So, Sat Chit Ananda, Absolute Bliss Consciousness. And because it is ananda, it is fulfilling. Because it is Chit, the absolute attribute less can become a living reality of day-to-day life.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 37 )

Ruth-St-Denis-in-Radha-3110040665.jpg

Let your dance guide you

Warm-Up: by choosing your music and tuning into your breath with breath-work, meditation, and then stretching movements to awaken your body. Pay close attention to the knees, wrists, elbows, and ankles.

Here you want to connect, cleanse, co-create, and celebrate with your body temple.

You can focus on themes or issues, or not. There are lots of types of movements and rhythms you can dance to and with or just use one or a few. You can dance in a structured way or free-from it or both. Think of circles, lines, and angles as you tell your story.

What it really is about is for you to become one with the music, the movement, and your energy being, letting all “trying to do it right” thoughts go so that you can clearly connect with your own Divine Life Force/Source.

Make sure you include a warm-up and a cool-down.

Cool Down: Here you will incorporate music, movement, breath, and words that bring you gradually into stillness. At this point, your creative juices will have been ignited. Allowing yourself to just follow the rhythm and flow your body, mind, and spirit has moved you through into its natural rest period helps you to sustain the energy of oneness and unity.

Sacred Dance as a spiritual practice will lead you on a journey that is impossible to describe or predict ahead of time, just like life itself. It will ebb and flow, cause you to sweat, stumble and soar, dampen and ignite you.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 35 )

FRE-SPIRIT-TOP-800x800.jpg

Let us explore one of the most potent magical elixir in our bodies?

Our Ovarian Power!

In Chinese Medicine the ‘energetic’ Kidneys govern the sexual organs, so Kidney Qi is inextricably linked to our Ovarian Qi.

In a recent seminar by Mantak Chia, he shared that 50% of the energy we’re born with (our Original Qi) is ‘sexual’ energy, in that 25% is ‘reproductive’ energy in our ovaries (or testicles) and 25% is back up reproductive energy, ie Kidney energy (that’s how vital this energy is in the body - half of our total potential stored here). We can squander our Kidney energy unknowingly by simply overdoing it, either physically or mentally, by getting stuck in fear or anxiety, by consuming adrenal-draining substances such as coffee, pharmaceutical, or recreational drugs.

Creating babies also takes up a great deal of this Qi and so too, albeit less so, we lose it in our menstrual blood.

The Taoist theory goes that the most potent proportion of this Original Qi sits in our ovaries - this makes perfect sense if you think that each egg (and there are a whopping 350 produced on average in a woman’s lifetime) contains enough yang energy to create a whole new human life. Most of this energy is unused and therefore wasted every time the egg is not fertilized and flows out with our menstrual blood.

The Taoists developed a practice called Ovarian Breathing to harness this powerful energy and re-route it in order to build up and enhance our physical energy levels, well-being, and creativity.

36.jpg

Prepare a sacred space and time when you have no distractions to tune into your body and explore your own sensuality and feminine power.

This meditation should be given ample time at least a half-hour and is great to perform after a ritual bath.

Ovarian Breathing meditation

As you start practicing Ovarian Breathing, it is highly beneficial to explore regularly practicing the foundation practices of the Healing Tao system, e.g Inner Smile, Six Healing Sounds and Micro Cosmic Orbit, and the basic qigong movements. This will ensure that your emotional, mental and physical energy bodies are as clear and flowing as possible, as working with sexual energy amplifies existing emotions - and that your heart energy is as open as possible, as it is the ovarian qi in combination with the compassion energy of the heart that creates the most transformation.

Here is one version of this powerful practice:

  • Start by drawing up juicy energy from the earth into the perineum and combine this with your own sexual energy, drawing them up to your heart.

  • Allow this energy to blossom into your hands and breasts and massage your breasts and nipples to connect with the whole endocrine system.

  • Allow this energy to flow down to the kidneys and then to the ovaries

  • Take plenty of time to activate the ovaries by:

  • smiling into them, spiraling them with eyes, wrapping them with light energy, massaging them with fingertips, expanding them on the in-breath and relaxing them on the out-breath.

  • Next, on the in-breath, allow perineum and ovaries to expand and blossom with earth energy

  • On the out-breath, contract yoni lightly and take awareness to Ovarian Palace, (in the womb, midpoint between ovaries) allowing more and more Qi to gather here with each out-breath.

  • When you feel a warmth or a fuller feeling in the Ovarian Palace, allow the Ovarian Qi to flow down to the perineum, spiral briefly here, and then gently pump this qi up the backchannel to the brain.

  • Spiral this potent qi inside the brain to allow it to charge up all the master glands located here. Spiral counterclockwise and then clockwise, breathing normally.

  • On an out-breath, allow the Qi to flow back down the front channel and either send it around the orbit again or finish by gathering and then condensing the Qi in the navel center, breathing deeply, smiling into your recharged pearl and your newly revitalized, rejuvenated body and mind!

Glossary:
Yoni = the sexual organs and most specifically the vaginal canal
Ovarian Palace/ Sexual Palace = the womb
Qi = life force energy

Origins of the Dance

The dance form that today many call belly dance is extremely old and traces of it can be found up to 6,000 years ago, in many cultures is honored the goddess as the giver of all life, feminine deity and celebration of women’s fertility.

Before Islam and Christianity, when the Mother Goddess was worshipped, sex and childbearing were sacred. During this time, many societies were matriarchal, and belly dancing was performed by women for women.

In the feminist movement, in the 1970s and 1980s in the USA was rediscovered belly dance as a form of dance that empowers women. A sisterhood long forgotten began to awaken.

What we called today belly dance, comes from the roots the specific type of dances that comes from Turkey and Egypt.
Bellydancing is the last vestige of goddess worship in the Middle East and is in danger of becoming extinct. Bellydancing began as a ritual for childbirth preparation in the ancient Middle East.

In Arabic, the dance is called Raks Sharqi, meaning "Oriental Dance". Bellydancing was later translated from the French Danse du Ventre, or stomach dance, which was used to describe tribal dances from a group of matriarchal Berbers in Algeria called the Oulid Nail. Bellydancing is not the only dance done by women in the Middle East. There are regional folkloric dances that also emphasize hip and abdominal movements. By looking at the specific movements of belly dance, some say that there could have been an influence coming from India & Africa.  Indeed some movements, such as the head slides, are found both in Indian dance and in belly dance. Belly dancing is the most well-known as international dance.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 30 )

Long ago the priestesses in communities carefully observed the patterns and rhythms of Nature. Attuning to earth’s cycles, they honored the Great Mother by performing sacred seasonal rituals. Women, seen as an embodiment of the Great Mother, were deeply revered, honored and celebrated for, like the earth, a woman too was able to grow life within her. Later in history, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian priestesses lived in holy temples. They, too, worshiped the Great Mother, the Goddess in Her many forms. They served the spiritual needs of the community as well and were also held in high esteem. Numerous hierarchies and historical events ensued. Soon, men began to fear the power of priestesses. The natural spiritual and mystical practices of priestesses were viewed as evil. Their power, greatly misunderstood, was thought to be a dark force that needed to be annihilated. Thousands of priestesses were persecuted, put to death for their beliefs and spiritual practices. Those managing to escape death fled their holy temples and went underground into hiding.

Today, in the midst of a two-thousand-year period of patriarchy, a modern-day priestess is emerging. She brings to present times richly-steeped ancient wisdom, integrating past spiritual teachings with a few spins of her own. In addition to her work as Priestess, she may also have a family and hold a conventional job as well. She holds within a deep moon-water essence, and her mission is to help bring into fruition the vital life-force energy of the almost forgotten Divine Feminine. Intuitively, she knows a conversion to a matriarchy isn't what's currently needed. A modern-day priestess instead directs her energy to restoring a natural, harmonious balance between the genders and All That Is. Weaving her fluid moon-water essence with the energies of the fixed sun-fire masculine, she helps re-birth Sacred Union.

Women choosing to walk the path of the priestess have answered a deep inner calling. Hearing within and resonating passionately to the ancient call of the Great Mother, a time came when each heart knew with absolute certainty... yes, this is it... Hers is the work I am to do...the very reason I've incarnated at this time! For me personally, the actual word “priestess” whenever spoken created an ecstatic internal hum, a familiar vibration that was/is one of pure bliss. How blessed to be so crystal clear regarding one's life purpose! This being said, I also feel compelled to share the path of the priestess, though richly rewarding, is not an easy one. It is a path requiring deep integrity and tremendous dedication. ~Cowrie shell

The moon can be seen as a representation of the Triple Goddess and the three phases of womanhood: the Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone.

As the symbol suggests, women share the same rhythm as the moon, with the female body typically corresponding to a 28-day cycle. Likewise, the three main phases of a woman’s life correspond with the three phases of the moon.

The triple moon symbol, also called the Triple goddess symbol, is represented by two crescent moons flanking a full moon. The left side of the symbol features a waxing moon, the center features a full moon, while the right side depicts a waning moon. The symbol is a representation of the changing phases of the moon which also correspond with the stages of womanhood. It can also symbolize the endless cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 28 )

Just Dance

For 30 min……anywhere

Most of us are aware of the physical benefits of dance. It can be used as a form of exercise burning calories, toning the body. But the physical benefits go far beyond those of just burning calories. Recent studies have shown that time spent dancing benefits us more than the same amount of time spent on the treadmill or exercise bike. The reason being that dancing is fun! Dance actually increases the production of the hormone serotonin and decreases dopamine production causing us to feel good and be more emotionally balanced.

Dance strengthens bones; releases chemicals that encourage nerve growth reduces risks of dementia and helps Alzheimer’s patients recall memories.  It is also believed to reduce incidents of cancer and help in the recovery of those who have already suffered from cancer.

On the emotional level, dance helps us to feel better by releasing emotions rather than suppressing them. It is also a creative process that brings us joy. People who are intimidated by the creative nature of dance may prefer to do dances with set patterns such as ballroom dancing. Either way, participants will still benefit from dance.

As well as the physical and emotional benefits of dance, dance also aids in developing our perfect body type by reconnecting us to our bodies. This is not only due to the physical activity but also because of the balancing and energizing nature of dance.

Movement is vibration. The universe vibrates.   Through dance, we can connect to that vibration, the spiritual aspect of dance. Dance can be used as a form of spiritual practice. This type of dance is referred to as Sacred Dance. Sacred Dance is when movement or vibration is used with the intention of connecting with God or the universe around us putting us in a state of ‘one-ness’ with the Divine, the universal vibration, the Tao.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 26 )

Many are her name. The Inner Woman, the Serpent Power, Kundalini Shakti. Present in many esoteric traditions, Kundalini refers to an energy that is coiled at the base of the spine. It’s been there since birth, and in most of us, it lies dormant. In a way, it is like a cable with a plug point that might not have found its energy socket. Today, many look for this socket through practices such as kundalini yoga, hatha yoga, and tantra.

The concept of Kundalini is present in the Upanishads, Sanskrit texts with essential philosophical concepts and ideas of Hinduism. Some of these concepts are also shared with Buddhism. No wonder it is such a present word in tantra: traditionally, tantra comes from the esoteric arms of Hinduism and Buddhism. But the same energy exists in different traditions, with different names. In Kabbalah, for example, it is called Shekhinah.

This mystical energy is described as a coiled snake with heads at both ends; a snake that when awakened can act either creatively, or destructively.

The snake comparison is by no means by chance: the poison of a snake can take one’s life, but if prepared correctly, it can save one from great illness.

81.jpg
82.jpg

What kind of energy is Kundalini?

Kundalini is the ultimate life force. Creative power, divine feminine energy. Put simply, it is our “inner fire”. So simple, and yet so abstract. Once activated, this energy is felt like liquid fire: electric, timeless, paralyzing.

When we activate this energy, it flows within us resembling the wavy shape of a serpent: curving from the base of the spine, into the gut, then into the heart, and into the head.

As the energy flows through this “pipe”, it goes through all of our chakras giving each of them a “boost” as the energy activates them (both kundalini and chakras live in the subtle body), all the way to our head, the crown chakra. It also passes through our nadis (energy “pipes” in our bodies that allow the energy to flow).

The result is an expanded state of consciousness.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 24 )

Today We continue to explore our relationships with our perception around nourishment.

Food can impact us in many ways and we can make food choices for many reasons.

It is clear is that there is a strong emotional and social connection to food.

In clinical practice, I find that many people have the knowledge of what food to eat to support their health or at least have a pretty good understanding. However, their nutrition choices don’t always reflect that knowledge.

In truth food is not just about understanding what we should eat, it is also about appreciating the connection between nutrition, our thoughts and emotions, and social interactions.

Emotions/feelings are an extremely strong trigger for food choices. From a young age, food becomes connected to a variety of emotions and social interactions. Whether sad, happy, celebrating, commemorating, lonely, angry, etc food is often used to support or cope with these emotions and circumstances. This relationship can start well before we are even in control of our own diet, influenced by our parent’s choices for us.

Primitively we as humans do a lot of things to either seek pleasure or avoid pain. Eating is no different. On a basic level, we can experience “pain” in the form of hunger and we seek pleasure in the form of sustenance (food & drink). Now consider when emotions get involved, we begin to avoid other forms of pain more related to emotions, and because we have learned that food or drink can provide pleasure we start to use these substances for reasons beyond just hunger.

We often find ourselves stuck in a bit of a pleasure trap when it comes to food, especially the types of food that trigger off the reward centers in the brain.

Journal Prompt

How do you know what your emotional relationship with food is like?

Here are few questions to bring some awareness to this area. Take some time to think about these questions and answer them as best as you can.

  1. Do you use food to enhance pleasure? If so, how do you do this?

  2. Do you use food to avoid pain, such as in the form of loneliness or anger? Does that work? Or do you end up feeling more dissatisfied?

  3. Does eating certain foods make you feel more anxious, guilty, or ashamed? Do you judge yourself for eating these foods?

  4. Do you turn to food in an attempt to fulfill much deeper cravings simply because you are dissatisfied with the other areas in your life? Such as work, relationships? If you began to live more in accordance with your highest values, how do you think that would impact your relationship with food?

  5. What’s your ideal emotional relationship with food?

Acknowledging this relationship is present is generally the first and most powerful step. Just witness without judgment and see where you want to consciously make changes.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 23 )

The Ayurvedic concept of fire, or agni, is critically important to our overall health

Agni is the force of intelligence within each cell, tissue, and every system within the body.

Ultimately, it is the discernment of agni that determines which substances enter our cells and tissues, and which substances should be removed as waste. In this way, agni is the gatekeeper of life.

54.jpg

Ayurveda identifies a vast range of functions for which agni is directly responsible, but it also teaches us that impaired agni is at the root of all imbalances and diseases. Hold on.

Let’s just let that sink in for a moment: impaired agni is at the root of all imbalances and diseases!

This resource is meant to help you understand why agni is so important, to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of both healthy and impaired agni, and to direct you to some practical tools for tending to your own agni.

A metaphor often used is your digestive fire is like a campfire.

You have to tend to it so the flames don’t get out of control and burn everything around it.

( This is the Pitta Dosh Out of Balance )

You also don’t want to understand or it will become damp and the fire with go out if surrounding elements are cold and wet.

(This is Kapha Dosha Out of Balance )

The goal is a steady moderate flame that is tended to and adjusted when needed.

(This is all Doshas in balance)

55.jpg

The microbiome
The term ‘microbiome’ refers to an ecosystem of microorganisms that live in and around the body, most of which reside in your gut. These microbes act as a protective barrier against foreign invaders with the potential to harm our health. We all have a unique microbiome comparable to our fingerprint which is defined by the environment both within and around us.
The bacteria found in our gut are essential for efficient digestion and also help to digest antioxidant polyphenols (shown to help reduce the risk of disease) and synthesize vitamins such as B12, D, folic acid, and thiamine. New and evolving research has also begun suggesting that the diversity of bacteria in your gut may even influence mental health and play a role in obesity by way of the gut-brain axis.

A healthy gut microbiome controls gut health by communicating with the intestinal cells, digesting certain foods, and preventing disease-causing bacteria from sticking to the intestinal walls.

Journal Prompt:

Think of your food as medicine. What are your favorite foods and what elements are in them?

Then think of your Doshas, and see if the foods that you naturally are attracted to are helping balance or imbalance your natural state.

( Example A pitta dominant person loves hot & SPICY foods so they should not have too much or the agni ( fire) will burn the stomach causing lining indigestion etc.

List 3 foods you could phase-out of that you know are harming your body.

Invite in 3 new foods and perhaps recipes to inspire more yummy foods once again viewed as medicine.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word meaning “science of life” (Ayur means “life or longevity” and Veda means “knowledge, wisdom, or science”).

Ayurveda is one of the oldest medical sciences in the world. It is full of practical methods to restore and maintain your health.

It may even sound a bit like your grandmother’s words of wisdom, and yet it is a powerful healing tool that is recognized by integrative medicine. Ayurveda is a holistic approach to health and is designed to help people live long, healthy, well-balanced lives. It focuses on creating sustainable daily practices that support the balance of an individual’s constitution—the physical body, mental body, and sense of purpose. Ayurveda is known as a “living science” because it incorporates modern developments and techniques into a body of ancient wisdom. In an Ayurveda, session information is gathered on lifestyle, diet, knowledge of herbs, and behavior, and then recommendations are created for each individual according to their unique body-mind type.

51.jpg
52.jpg
53.jpg

We are all made up of these elements and one of the main goals in Ayurveda is to gain a deeper understanding of your natural harmonious state of being.

As well as learn how to nourish our body, mind, and spirit through balancing the doshas.

Sacred Dance Day Sadhana ( Day 21 )

Within every woman is the primal source of her power, her inner wild. This Goddess energy propels us into creativity, pleasure, bliss, and rich life experience. However, many of us have become disconnected from this vital source, worn down by the grind of daily life and limiting stories we have about who we are and what we're capable of.

81.jpg

In order to dive deeper into our Divine Feminine, we need to get really comfortable with the aspects of ourselves that may have previously seemed shameful, too much, or "inappropriate" in some way. While all beings have masculine and feminine energy within them. Fully activating your feminine energy means claiming new levels of power, pleasure, and presence.

In short, it means coming into a whole new version of self—one that is more deeply integrated and authentic, and one that leads from the heart. No matter where you are on your journey to show up for yourself, there are always more layers to peel back.

Here are five ways to tap into this wild energy right now:

1. Practice following your intuition.

This begins with listening to subtle messages from the body rather than rationalizations of the mind. Getting too wrapped up in analytical processes when making decisions is generally considered a quality of our masculine energy. Find balance by allowing your heart to tell you the truth.

Start simply by pausing to check in with yourself before responding to questions. Ask yourself about what you really desire, not just about the easiest or most logical option. Don't say "yes" when you really mean "no." Often we suppress what we truly desire because we deem it silly, crazy, or impossible. We can never know what's possible unless we hold the door open for our thoughts to pass through.

2. Connect more deeply with your body.

This follows point one. How often are you actually noticing how you feel throughout the day? The body is a beautiful vessel that speaks to us in sensation. When we don't listen to it, we disconnect from our ability to create pleasure.

Self-massage Starting with your feet is a very grounding practice. It re-connects to the earth and with our powerful inner wisdom while building self-trust and confidence in who we are.

3. Honor your "light" and your "dark."

The shadow self represents aspects of our being that we have tried to sweep under the rug and forget about. Often, we avoid these qualities because they are very painful for us to process. However, keeping any part of yourself hidden means you are never fully integrated. You are a fragmented human in a way.

By bringing these "dark" aspects into the "light," or merely being willing to witness and release them, we pave the way for new levels of self-sovereignty. This process also builds compassion for self and others and cultivates a higher degree of releasing the fear of opinions of others.

4. Practice self-inquiry.

Perhaps one of the most important ways we enhance our connection to our inner selves is by asking questions. We want to inquire, regularly, about why we think the things we do, why we behave certain ways, or why we engage in particular practices, routines, or patterns. So often, these things are not chosen out of free will; they're conditioned. We might avoid our true desires simply because we've been told they're "bad" or "wrong" or "weird," or because we simply perceive them that way in our minds.

5. Engage in a judgment detox.

We've all heard it: Judgment of others is just judgment of ourselves. When we judge others, it's because there's something we can't accept about them and therefore probably can't accept about ourselves. This is particularly problematic with women because we really want to eradicate any notion of competition or making others "less than." Goodness knows we've been working long and hard to rise.

When we judge others, it's coming from a wound of inadequacy, be it low self-esteem, low self-worth, or simply not processing misplaced anger or fear. The best thing to do is nip the thought in the bud just by starting to notice it, then redirecting it. The more we engage in this practice, the easier it becomes, and consequently, the more able we are to show up from the heart for ourselves and others.

There's so much to uncover the truth of who we are underneath who we've been told we're supposed to be. The Wild Feminine, of course, entails much more than is outlined here, and there are many ways to access her. The flow of creative energy, inspiration, and sensuality that comes from tapping into this deeper aspect of ourselves is medicine for the spirit, and it's hyper-magnetic to our desires. When we allow for the fullness of who we are, our lives, in turn, also become more full.
